The Big Island is the youngest Hawaiian island by 5 million years. Instead of sandy beaches (although it has some of those too) there are lava fields. The black sand beach looks surprisingly like what I would just call sand on the Washington coast. Just a little more sparkly. The cooled lava rock varies in color and is extremely sharp.

Love the black sand photo, Erica.
That black sand is amazing …. it totally messed my head up when I stood with my toes in it. Such an amazing sight, but at the same time so weird and unlike anything you can imagine.
I do love the warmth of the black sand. Don’t know why, but I swear it’s warmer than “normal white sand”.
P.S. You wore the perfect color sandals for that photo. Your buckles show that the sand really is black.
